Hertug Duskfang

The Hertug of Darkwatch Forest: Salem Duskfang is a very old bureaucrat. His seat has been held for 50 years, since before The Shattering, and as such his people are loyal to a fault, just as he is towards them. His wise rule has led the forest from a land of fear, filled with fearful men and beasts unsure of what lurked around the next tree trunk to a land of mystery, where strange creatures of all shapes and sizes are welcomed and given haven.

With The Shattering came a paradigm shift for the Hertug. His own evolution into a wolf-like creature taught him of the power and wisdom held by the denizens of the forest, and a greater respect for things unknown grew upon him. His creation of The Darkwatch is perhaps the best representation of that: he envisioned a force that understands the dualistic nature of his forest, benevolent warriors who could view situations omnisciently and decide the outcome without delay. These warriors are Duskfang’s right arm, doling out justice on a case-by-case basis with no need for court nor kingly rule. As such, Duskfang has kept his hereditary title once bestowed on his great-grandfather by the true king of Castle Pitch, a now-destroyed castle in the far-northeast which once housed the Royal Bloodline.

Portly from age and inactivity, Duskfang’s agility is more due to his canine half than to any training or skill. His round frame is contained within an intricate breastplate of Ebonflesh, an heirloom passed down through his family. His dogged determination is clearly visible on his lined face, a permanent scowl marked in his deepest wrinkles around his mouth and across his brow. The hair on his chin looks more like profuse whiskers than a beard, the thin wiry hairs poke in every direction and bend erratically. The most noticeable feature of the Hertug however, is his incredible lack of teeth, having lost them long ago due to the damp wet nature of Darkwatch Forest combined with the lack of nutrient-rich food. Duskfang had used a set of dentures made of Ebonflesh, but after The Shattering, his changing jawline forced the teeth out and he stubbornly attempts to find a new set that will adhere to his canine jawline.
