Aeterno: Planar Rift
Aeterno, a land once ruled almost entirely by just and fair men. The thriving society they lived in had effectively gone to every corner of their fair land and rooted out all other races until man stood towering over the rubble. Over the next several hundred years the scholars and mages of the land left behind their magical ways and forgot all that they knew, preferring instead to toil away on machines of servitude and war. The Argent Reformists of White Plain however, continued meddling with what spells they remembered in a misguided effort to transmute metals into gold. Their trust in a long-forgotten scroll however, was sloppy and brash; Like children with a new plaything they ventured into matters they should never have known without due care or attention. In doing so, they created an unspeakable event that wiped the face of Aeterno clean. This event has been remembered by the few survivors as The Shattering; In a cruel irony none could have known at the time, though Aeterno had been shattered, the fabric holding reality together had begun to disintegrate. The many Planes of Existence had all become unlivable to their denizens and a mass exodus has created a massive diaspora of superplanar races vying for attention across the ravaged landscape.
The event occured in what was once the southwestern corner of the Alabaster Shield, a multicultural land ruled by justice and logic. This land has now mostly disappeared, replaced by a massive rift in the earth that filled with all the water from the land’s ocean; known as Cerulaea and inhabited by the many unknown aquatic creatures the humans had ignored: mutated beyond belief and joined by the inhabitants of watery realms.
The epicentre itself, hidden in the surrounding mountains of the shield, are now The Verdant Isles. The capital is a high mountain island that surround an entirely cut off basin caused by the explosion. Some call this sudden pit Viridian Basin, but other contemporaries have begun to refer to this hole by its true role The Planar Rift.
The area that was once known as The Alabaster Shield is now a desolate wasteland, sand as far as the eye can see, which reaches north in a massive spit to surround the blast area containing The Verdant Isles. The sand-dwelling people of The Gilded Nether build vast cities under the dunes, sprawling marketplaces of cloth and wood, built year over year to support the massive desert contained above.
To the north of this area is the rolling dunes of Desolation, once the imposing mountain cliffs of the Tyr people.
Their Easternmost mountain peaks slope away to Darkwatch Forest, a land still ruled by just, right-thinking men. These wizened commanders of the ruling class make up The Darkwatch, a band of super-powerful rangers, druids and rogues who keep the forces of the night hidden away in the massive forest they live and work in.
South of the forest’s edge lies what little of the Alabaster Shield left undestroyed. This small temperate valley is now ruled from the capital Amaranth; which sprouts like a flower from the abandoned city White Plain, ruled by a pantheon of deva and angels who preside watchfully over the descendants of the people of White Plain.
South of this just and shining land is the vast jungle coast of The Crimson Bound. The land south of here is a vast savannah which rolls unhindered to the tundra of Gehenna, the domain of the abhorrent and evil beasts of demonic Planes.
